The first few days of our trip we'll spend exploring the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. We'll start by making our way to the Kauaeranga Valley, in the Coromandel Forest Park and climbing to Pinnacles Hut. This will take us about 3 hours. We'll stay the night at this luxurious D.O.C. Hut.
We return the next day by the same route or take the "Billy Goat Track", your option! We should be back at the bus by 4.00 p.m. and on our way to Coromandel. This is an old gold mining town from days gone by with lots of historical points of interest.
We'll drive up to Cape Colville, making our way around the picturesque coastline of the Peninsula and down to Whitianga. After lunch you have the option to cross the harbour and cycle to Hot Water Beach or go by bus. We will be spending the night here.
We drive from Hot Water Beach to Whangamata, then we'll just enjoy a day on the beach or we carry on to Waihi Beach, go for a walk and camp in "The Wild".
Takes us from Waihi to Rotorua, one of the "musts"of New Zealand with its boiling mudpools and geysers. We will visit a Maori cultural show and stay at the Thermal Holiday Park.
We have a whole day to explore all these Natural and Cultural wonders.
We'll hike over Mount Whakapoungakau (758m), the views are well worth the effort so don't forget your camera! This will take us about 3.5 hours and then it is off to Opotiki, staying at the Backpackers Beach House.
We will be travelling along the beautiful East Coast to Te Araroa, Hicks Bay. We put up camp here.
We'll start bright and early to watch the sunrise from the Lighthouse and then it is back to Camp for breakfast. Mount Hikurangi (1754m) is our next stop and if weather permits, we'll go to the top. We are staying the night in a D.O.C. Hut, if we decide to give Hikurangi a miss, we'll be carrying on to Wairoa.
We'll stay at Wairoa Backpackers and we'll just take it easy for a day in preparation for what is coming!
We travel from Wairoa through the Urewera National Park to Lake Waikaramoana, from where the much praised track around the lake starts. We'll be tramping for about 5 hours to the Panekiri Hut and if weather is with us, we'll enjoy beautiful views from the Bluff over the Lake.
We walk through magnificent forests on our way to the Marauiti Hut.
Another 5 to 6 hours will see us to the end of the track and back in the bus on our way to Minginui.
Minginui is in the Whirinaki State Forest Park, a beautiful example of what the forests used to look like. We will be taking a 3 hour walk to the Lagoon, well worth the effort! Then back to camp.
We drive to Taupo or Turangi and we'll enjoy a nice quiet day on the Lake.
